Pilcrow is local-first. Your documents live on your own disk, and the app works fully offline. This policy explains the few cases where data leaves your machine, all of which you control.
Reading, editing, exporting (PDF, EPUB, HTML), your settings, your persona and tone instructions, and any local AI you run through Ollama all happen entirely on your computer. None of it is sent to us or to anyone else. Pilcrow has no account system or sign-in.
The Pilcrow website records a small set of cookie-free aggregate events: page views, download clicks, checkout clicks, verified purchases, and license claims. Website events contain only the event type, coarse page and button placement, plan, and timestamp. They do not contain document contents, typed text, email addresses, cookies, advertising IDs, persistent visitor or session identifiers, full URLs, or referrers, and they are not used for cross-site tracking. Normal server access logs may temporarily contain technical request information such as an IP address and browser user agent.
Activating a Pilcrow AI license is verified on your device using cryptography. Your license key is checked locally and is not sent to our servers to activate. It is stored on your machine so the app remembers you are activated.
If you subscribe to Pilcrow AI and choose a cloud model, then and only then does the app contact our server. When you run a cloud action (Improve, Rewrite, Expand, Summarize, To Notes), the app sends:
We do not store the text you send, and we do not use it to train any model. It is processed to produce your result and then discarded. Reading, editing, local AI, and export never trigger a network request.
To generate results, our server passes your text to the cloud model provider you select: Z.ai for GLM, DeepSeek, OpenAI for GPT-5.6 Luna, or Anthropic for Claude Haiku 4.5. Each provider has its own privacy policy governing that processing. We send only the text and instructions needed to complete your request, never your identity beyond what is required to operate the service.
Purchases are processed by Stripe, which has its own privacy policy. We never see or store your full card details. To operate subscriptions and deliver your license key, we retain your email address, the plan you bought, the issued license key, and Stripe reference identifiers (customer and subscription IDs). We use these to issue and display your license after checkout, attempt email delivery, verify that a subscription is active, provide support, and process refunds.
When you buy Pilcrow AI, your license key is displayed on the verified checkout confirmation page. We also attempt to email it to the address on your purchase. We do not add you to a marketing list.
You can use Pilcrow's free features forever without sending us anything. If you are a subscriber and want your account data removed, email us and we will delete the license record associated with your email, subject to any records we must keep for tax and accounting.
We may update this policy from time to time. Changes are posted on this page with a new revision date.
